I must confess that I don’t understand the outcry over Walmart’s decision to sell t-shirts through its website that support the impeachment of President Donald Trump.
Actually, that’s not entirely true. I do get it. We live in an era in which everyone is offended about everything, and we are so politically charged as a nation and as a society that it doesn’t take much to start a dumpster fire.
And it isn’t as though the outcry didn’t pay off; Walmart has pulled the “Impeach 45” apparel from its website, after all.
But I can’t help wondering how much of the outrage was genuine and how much of it was feigned.
Don’t get me wrong; I don’t like retailers getting involved in politics. I’ve stopped shopping at Dick’s Sporting Goods and REI over their anti-gun policies, and I will not return to either. But my decisions in those cases were based on what the retailers were refusing to sell, not what they had decided to sell.
It’s not that I support a move to impeach Trump. Such efforts are not helpful for this nation; the only way they should be undertaken with any seriousness is if the president has done something that renders him truly unfit to govern. However much I may disagree with Trump’s callous, self-centered approach to politics, and however much you may disagree with his policies, he’s clearly done nothing that rises to the level of impeachment — not unless Robert Mueller’s eternal probe reveals something, and I’m pretty sure the rapture is going to occur before Mueller renders his findings to a grand jury or the American public.
But if we’re going to start boycotting every retailer because they sell something we’re offended by, we are soon going to run out of places to shop. And it’s not as though Walmart, of all businesses, has an anti-Trump agenda. If Walmart chose not to sell pro-Trump merchandise while trumpeting anti-Trump merchandise, the boycott argument might be legitimate. However, Walmart offers plenty of MAGA gear and other pro-Trump gear through its website.
If it’s okay for the right to boycott Walmart over an “Impeach 45” t-shirt, is it also okay for the left to boycott the store over a MAGA ball cap?
These things tend to work both ways.
